A Little Background on the Cattle Industry

Florida is what they call a "Cow/Calf" state. We raise beef cows to produce calves. Some of those calves are kept as replacement animals, sold to other cattle producers, or sent to "Stockers" and "Feedlots". 

Cowen Cattle Company, that we visited on Day 2 is that "Stocker" operation. They bring in weaned calves and transition them to eating feed, updating vaccinations, and making sure they are healthy. Most of these calves weigh between 400 and 600 pounds.

From there they are sent on to "Feedlots" where they are fed and cared for until they reach market weight, around 1200 pounds. Then they are sent for processing to become the meat we buy in the grocery stores.
